rear brake ???

ok .....i was looking at my rear brakes the other night and i noticed that there is what looks like a sensor right next to the caliper !!!! is that what it is ?? what does it do ???

The beauty being, you can change sprocket sizes without the speedo reading out. :thumbup

How can you not be using the rear brake?!?!? The rear brake is what settles the bike when braking hard into corners. If you're not using it you're either not riding hard enough or incorrectly. Even when coming to a stop at a set of lights you should be applying a little rear brake after having engaged the front brakes to help settle the bike. It's also a fact that using the rear and front brakes to stop in an emergency will make the bike stop in a shorter distance than if you had just used the front.

If you've got an RSV later than '02, the rear brake will stop working all by itself anyway, easily fixed by shelling out for the Aprilia replacement part, or simply drilling out the plastic bit the hose from the fluid res goes onto, but...

It is not required to use the rear brake to settle the bike, as it will often do just the opposite, in my opinion anyway, and it's been said by more than just myself, that I get along at quite a decent clip. The rear brake is often used to trail the rear wheel into corners by GP gods, (slide it in to tighten up you corner entry point), but on all the bikes I've ridden, I can brake just as hard with or without.

I dont use the rear brake when racing as the front is too loaded for the rear brake to be much use as the rear wheel is not in much contact with the ground. And when setting up for a corner my feet are positioned on the pegs in such a way I cant reach the lever anyway. If I could get used to a thumb brake I might be tempted to use it just a little when I run wide..

On the road though I use it most of the time to apply more equal brakeing when coming to junctions or traffic lights to stop all my weight going forward. Even more so when I have someone on the back. ALthough my back brake on the RSVR just might as well be in the Bin! LOL
