Flipping the bird (giving the finger) is derived from the Battle of Againcourt. The English longbowman would show their middle finger to the French to show that they could still fire their bows. When the French would capture a longbowman, they would cut off the middle finger thus rendering them incapable of firing their bows..

And it's where the saying f$#k you while giving the bird came from - changed from pluck yew, yew as in a yew bow. And because the arrows in the yew bow had pheasant feathers in them, the "bird" comes into it :laugh
(The bird here is a one finger salute too, not a back to front V)

Yup, heard from a historian on a diving boat once upon a time about the vee being shown to the enemies of the english army to show that these 2 fingers were going to plucking kill yew (you've got way too much of a furtive imagination)...
